영어 동화 어휘와 교육과정 어휘의 관련성 조사 - 초등영어를 중심으로 -

본 연구는 초등영어 교사들의 영어 동화책 사용 실태를 조사하여 현재 많이 사용되고 있는 영어 동화의 어휘를 분석하고, 영어 동화책의 어휘가 얼마나 진정성 높은 어휘로 이루어져 있으며 교육 과정 어휘와 어느 정도 관련성을 갖고 있는지 살펴보고자 한다. 또한, 분석 결과를 바탕으로 우리나라 초등영어 수업에 활용이 가능한 동화의 수준과 목록을 제안하고자 한다.

본 연구를 위해 먼저 선정된 영어 동화책 100권의 어휘를 컴퓨터에 입력하여 코퍼스를 만들었고, 컨코던스 프로그램을 이용하여 어휘 분석을 하였다. 그 결과, 대용량 코퍼스의 어휘와 비교해 볼 때, 영어 동화책의 어휘가 교과서의 어휘에 비해 진정성이 있음이 밝혀졌다. 영어 동화책 선정의 적정 수준을 제시하면, 어휘 변이가 20% 이하인 책, 동화 전체의 어휘 수(type)가 50개 이하인 책, 교육과정 어휘를 70% 이상 포함한 책이 초등 수준에 적당하다는 것이다. 이와 같은 조건을 갖춘 동화책은 동화 안에서 어휘가 5회 이상 반복되고, 학습할 어휘 수가 적은 편이며, 교육과정을 통해 학습한 어휘를 바탕으로 하기 때문에 대체로 쉽게 접근할 수 있는 동화라 하겠다. 영어 동화 코퍼스는 진정성 있는 어휘로 이루어진 예시문을 어린이 수준에 맞게 제시해 줄 수 있으므로 활용 가치가 크다. 앞으로 다양한 자료를 활용하여 어린이 수준의 코퍼스 구축을 한다면 영어 학습에 많은 도움을 줄 수 있을 것이다.

Vocabulary is one of the most important factors in developing language learners' communicative competence. Many studies have shown that storybooks have a great effect on improving students' English vocabulary. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between the words of English Curriculum and those of English storybooks and to classify the English storybooks for elementary students. For this purpose, two corpora were built by wording the texts into a computer. One is a corpus of elementary English textbooks and the other is a corpus of one hundred English storybooks selected according to certain criteria.

The results of analyzing the corpora using a concordance program are as follows. First, the words of corpora of English textbooks and the those of English storybooks were compared to CIC and CANCODE Spoken. The analysis showed that English storybooks include more authentic words than English textbooks do. Second, one hundred English storybooks were classified for each grade of elementary student and the standards of choosing English storybooks for elementary English lessons were suggested: The storybooks having less than 20% lexical variation, the storybooks written with less than 50 types and the storybooks including more than 70% types of English curriculum. Corpora for children using English storybooks, videotapes, dramas and so on need to be built in the future.
