여성학적 관점에 의거한 배려윤리학의 실제적 의미

이 글의 목적은 미국의 여성학적 교육과정이론가로 알려진 넬 나딩즈의 배려윤리학이 현대도덕 교육에 실제적으로 어떤 의미를 주는가에 대한 대답을 모색하는 데에 있다. 나딩즈는 배려윤리학에 입각한 도덕교육방법으로서 본보기, 대화, 실천, 격려 등 네 가지를 제시하지만 이 각각의 방법에 대한 그녀의 설명만으로는 이러한 방법들이 구체적으로 어떤 의미를 가지는지, 다시 말하여 그것이 어째서 배려윤리학이라는 새로운 이론에 입각하여 제시되는 방법인지를 정확하게 알기 어렵다. 더군다나 그것은 서구의 산업화 이전의 사회윤리나 동양의 전근대적인 사회윤리와 혼동되어 파악될 소지를 다분히 가지고 있다. 그러나 이것은 배려윤리학의 근본적인 취지를 뿌리째 흔드는 생각이다. 나딩즈가 제시하는 도덕교육방법이 현대도덕교육에 어떤 새로운 실제적 의미를 주는지를 알기 위해서는 배려에 관한 그녀의 철학적 건축이 무엇보다 ‘여성학적’ 관점 위에서 건설된 것임을 철저히 인식하는 것이 필요하다. 나딩즈가 말하는 배려는 전근대적인 가부장적 사회에서의 도덕적 인간 관계를 규정하는 개념이 아니라 비가부장적이고 양성평등적인 사회에서의 ‘새로운’ 인간관계를 특징 짓는 개념으로 이해되어야 하며 그러한 배려에 입각한 나딩즈의 도덕교육방법은 여성학적 인식을 고취시키고 그것을 실천하도록 하는 방법인 만큼 철저한 여성학적 인식 위에서 실행되어야 한다.

The aim of this paper is to find the practical implication of Noddings′ ‘Care Ethics' on the current moral education. Noddings shows four methods of moral education such as modeling, dialogue, practice, confirmation, but it would be difficult to understand their practical meaning only with her explanations about them. What is worse, there is a possibility for misunderstanding that care ethics is similar to that of premodern or patriarchal society. This association can be very dangerous. To understand the right meaning of care ethics, we have to thoroughly realize that her care ethics is constructed on the ‘feminist' basis. The ‘caring’ in Noddings′ ethics is the concept to describe the new human relationship in the rationalized and non-patriarchal society, not in premodern and patriarchal society, and Noddings′ moral education methods are for cultivating the feminist epistemology from the moral viewpoint.
