ABSTRACT

Allowing elementary schools to develop their own cour ses in Chinese characters will provide the basis for our educational policy on Chinese characters . Courses in Chinese characters for elementary school students have been r evised and the textbook Element ary School Chinese Characters has been put into use. T he goal of this educational policy is to promote standards suitable to the level of students in our elementary schools . It is believed that this program will help to develop our national culture.

There is the need to ask whether Chinese character education is essential to element ary school students or not . However , we all know that we are now in the midst of a crisis in terms of the history of our civilization, and that as human beings , we st and between culture and civilization. T her efore, the solution to this problem must be based on changed in our world view, one based on a human per spective. I am not saying that we can solve this problem simply by promoting Chinese char acter education in our schools, but I do think that such education will serve to stifle man' s wild greed. Though our intentions and goals are not necessarily visible in the course and in the various classroom activities, I do at least anticipate the potential of some fruit from our efforts.
