논술고사의 주요 쟁점과 개선 방안 탐색

논술고사가 실시된 지 20년이 지났지만 논술고사의 목적, 개념, 시행방법 등을 둘러싼 논의는 명료해지기는커녕 갈수록 혼란이 가중되고 있다. 논술고사가 갖는 사회적․교육적 의의를 강화하고 학교교육을 정상화시키기 위해서는, 관련 주체의 충분한 토의를 통해 논술고사의 본래적 의의를 성찰하고, 논술고사의 정체성 및 시행방법을 잘 가다듬을 필요가 있다.

연구자는 논술고사와 관련된 주요쟁점을 ① 논술고사의 목적, ② 논술고사의 개념, ③ 논술고사의 출제주체, ④ 논술고사의 문항유형, ⑤ 논술고사의 채점으로 설정하고, 이러한 쟁점의 바람직한 해결방향에 대하여 논의하였다.

연구자가 쟁점과 관련하여 제안한 내용을 요약하면 다음과 같다. ① 논술고사의 목적은 ‘비판적․논리적 사고력, 창의적인 문제해결 능력’을 평가하는 데 있다. ② 논술고사의 개념은 ‘양식으로서의 논술’이 아니라 ‘장르로서의 논술’로서 정의되어야 한다. ③ 논술고사의 문항은 생활경험, 범교과 학습경험을 바탕으로 자신의 견해를 자유롭게 전개할 수 있도록 개방적인 문항을 출제하여야 한다. ④ 채점의 신뢰도를 높일 수 있는 채점체제를 마련하여야 한다.

This article aims to examine the issues of the Korean essay test and to suggest the alternatives. The college entrance examination, so called, Nonsul(the Korean essay test administered by each university) has been enforced for about 20 years. The social, educational significance of the Korean essay test is immense. However, the goals, concept and regulations for the application of the Korean essay test are not clearly defined. This article categorize the issues of the Korean Essay test in four. They are ① the goals of essay test, ② concept of essay test, ③ a person who makes questions for an examination, ④ types of items, ⑤ a person who rating an answer. The issues cover from Nonsul items to test system.

The desirable alternatives this article suggests are as follows: ① essay test must evaluate student's critical, creative thinking ability, ② essay test should focus on writing as a genre, ③ writing task must be open-ended and inclusive, ④ rating system for essay test to reinforce its reliability is needed.
